Manchester United are set to up their offer for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata having seen on bid turned down already, but are confident of securing a cut-rate deal for the Spaniard, according to The Guardian.
What’s the word?
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho seems hell bent on a reunion with Morata at Old Trafford as he seeks a replacement for top goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The 24-year-old, who made 18 appearances under Mourinho for Los Blancos, has grown frustrated under Zinedine Zidane’s management in the Spanish capital due to a lack of playing time and looks to be on his way out this summer.
However, Madrid president, Florentino Pérez will be looking to make as much from this deal as possible having acted on a £30m buy-back clause from Juventus last summer, and is reportedly looking for €90m (around £79m).
Despite Perez’s hopes it seems United are still confident of getting a cut-rate with a second offer of £60m.
Worth the money?
Given that just last summer Morata moved for £30m, is he actually worth the more than double valuation being placed on his head in Madrid?
Although it would seem like Perez is hoping for a lot to get nearly £80m for a striker who has managed just 15 league goals this season, he may not be going to mad.
It must be remembered that the £30m paid a year ago was half the £60m reportedly offered by Antonio Conte and Chelsea in the same window, only beaten to a deal because of Madrid’s clause.
With that in mind, and in the current market, it seems like should United land a deal for around £60m then it may not be bad business after all.
