According to ESPN, Manchester United are prepared to give Alexis Sanchez another chance to impress in the summer.
What’s the word?
The Chile international endured a torrid time at Old Trafford after making the move to Manchester from Premier League rivals Arsenal. In 45 appearances across all competitions, the 31-year-old scored just five times, providing a further nine assists.
His United misery came to an end when he was allowed to join Serie A giants Inter on a season-long loan, but he has struggled for game time with the Italian side after missing 14 games due to an injury, making just seven appearances.

Now, ESPN claim that Sanchez has been told he is expected back at United this summer, and whilst they “remain open” to selling him, “they will not sanction a cut-price exit to get him off the books”. The report further adds Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told it is likely he will have to include the Chilean in his plans for the coming season.
And in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester City, Solskjaer hinted about what is to come for Sanchez’s future, saying “clubs don’t want to lose their best players, so Alexis will come back in the summer and prove you all wrong!”.
Learning from mistakes
This would be a prime example of a team not learning from their previous mistakes. United were badly burnt by Sanchez’s struggles at Old Trafford, eventually burdened by his reported £350k-a-week contract. It was like an albatross around their necks, no doubt weighing them down when it came to negotiating new deals for their existing stars, and when trying to sign players too.

But ultimately, the finances would all be justifiable so long as he was delivering on the pitch. And Sanchez certainly didn’t do that. His abysmal tally of just five goals proves that, whilst he averaged a measly 6.60 match rating as per Whoscored in the 2018/2019 Premier League campaign. And at 31, the Chilean is hardly getting any younger, and is in the final stages of his footballing career.
The Red Devils would therefore be making a foolish mistake by offering another opportunity to someone who quite simply hasn’t shown he deserves it. They should look to move him on permanently as soon as his loan from Inter finishes, and finally get rid of a player who has failed to hit the heights. If not, they risk getting burned again, and that would be the ultimate sign of naivety.
Meanwhile, Manchester United fans have discussed this former ace’s impressive display for his new side.
