According to reports in The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier is open to a summer move to Manchester United, who are prepared to pay £50m for the 23-year-old and more than double his £70,000-a-week wages.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer and The Guardian says Dier is still his top target, despite Spurs previously insisting that he isn’t for sale after United submitted an offer earlier this summer.
However, the 23-year-old is a boyhood United fan and The Guardian says he is keen on the move as he knows he would be played in his preferred midfield position, rather than in defence where he often found himself under Mauricio Pochettino last term.
The report adds that United are also willing to more than double the England international’s current £70,000-a-week wages – something Tottenham can’t compete with – which leaves chairman Daniel Levy with a decision to make.
How did Dier do last season?
Despite two impressive season in Tottenham’s midfield prior to last term, Dier was deployed in defence more often than not after Victor Wanyama established himself in the middle of the park following his move from Southampton last summer.
The 23-year-old still made 48 appearances in all competitions though and became a key part of the three-man defence alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation later in the campaign.
Will Tottenham be tempted to sell?
It really could depend on the player.
Levy knows that Pochettino is building a team that can challenge at the right end of the Premier League table and in Europe and the highly-rated Argentine boss won’t want to lose of any of his key players this summer.
However, Spurs will not be able to match United’s offer in wages and if Dier really does want to go, the north London outfit may choose to accept the £50m offer as they could even bring in two new players to replace the versatile England international.
What’s the verdict, then?
Well, the news that Dier is keen on a move to Manchester United is not good news for Tottenham or Mauricio Pochettino as they won’t want to strengthen a rival, but if the player wants out then £50m is certainly enough to replace him wisely.
